How it works
- Type or paste text into the box. Counts update as you type.
- Words are runs of text separated by spaces or line breaks that contain at least one letter or number.
- Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, rounded up to a whole minute.
Counting rules
- Standalone punctuation such as a spaced dash is not a word, so “a - b” is 2 words.
- Words joined without spaces, such as “well-known” or “word—word”, count as one word.
- Text with no spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, counts as one word per space-separated run.
- Sentences are estimated from . ! ? and … followed by a space or the end, so “Dr. Smith” counts as 2.
- Line breaks are normalised first, so a Windows line break (CRLF) counts as one character.
- A character is what you see as one symbol, so an accented letter or an emoji counts once.
- Your text is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.
Worked example: “One.”, a blank line, then “Two three.” has 3 words, 2 sentences, 2 paragraphs and 3 lines.
