Character Counter
Count characters with and without spaces, check a character limit, and see UTF-8 size.
Type or paste text to count it.
Your text is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.
How it works
- Type or paste text into the box. Counts update as you type.
- Optionally enter a character limit to see how many characters remain, or by how many you are over.
- UTF-8 bytes is the storage size of the text, which matters for limits measured in bytes.
Counting rules
- Characters (no spaces) leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- UTF-8 bytes can exceed the character count: “café” is 4 characters but 5 bytes.
- Line breaks are normalised first, so a Windows line break (CRLF) counts as one character.
- A character is what you see as one symbol, so an accented letter or an emoji counts once.
- Your text is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.
Worked example: “Hello, world!” has 13 characters, 12 without spaces, 2 words and 13 UTF-8 bytes.
