Text Compare
Paste an original and a changed version to see exactly what was added, removed or left unchanged, line by line or word by word. Everything runs in your browser.
Text Compare
Compare two texts line by line or word by word and see what was added, removed or left unchanged.
Paste two versions of a text to see the differences.
Your text is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.
How it works
- Paste the original into the first box and the changed version into the second. The comparison updates as you type.
- Choose Lines to compare whole lines, or Words to compare individual words within running text.
- Removed text is marked with a minus and strikethrough, added text with a plus and underline, and unchanged text is left plain, so the result does not rely on colour alone.
- Copy diff copies the result as text. Swap exchanges the two boxes, which turns additions into removals.
Counting rules
- The comparison finds the fewest additions and removals needed to turn the original into the changed text. When there is a choice, removals are listed before additions.
- Lines mode compares whole lines exactly. “Ignore whitespace differences” trims each line and treats runs of spaces and tabs as one space; the line is still shown as you typed it.
- Words mode compares runs of non-space characters. Spaces and line breaks never count as differences or in the totals.
- “Ignore case” treats upper and lower case as the same. Text is shown with its original casing.
- Copy diff in Lines mode prefixes each line with “+ ”, “- ” or two spaces. In Words mode removed text is written [-like this-] and added text {+like this+}.
- For speed, each text is limited to 5,000 lines (Lines mode) or 20,000 words (Words mode).
- Your text is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.
Worked example: “the quick fox” compared with “the slow fox” gives the [-quick-] {+slow+} fox: 1 added, 1 removed, 2 unchanged.
