Percentage Calculator

Work out a percentage of a number, find what percentage one number is of another, or find the whole from a part and its percentage.

Percentage

Find a percentage of a number, what percentage one number is of another, or the whole.

Type of percentage calculation

What is%of?

20% of 150

30

How it works

Choose one of three questions. "What is X% of Y?" takes a percentage and a value. "X is what % of Y?" takes a part and a total. "X is Y% of what?" takes a known amount and the percentage it represents.

To find a percentage of a number, multiply the number by the percentage ÷ 100. To find what percentage one number is of another, divide it by the other number and multiply by 100. To find the whole, divide the known amount by the percentage and multiply by 100.

Y cannot be zero in "X is what % of Y?" and the percentage cannot be zero in "X is Y% of what?", because both divide by it. To compare an old and a new value, use Percentage Change instead.

Formula

What is X% of Y? result = (X ÷ 100) × Y

X is what % of Y? percentage = (X ÷ Y) × 100

X is Y% of what? whole = (X ÷ Y) × 100

Worked example: 20% of 150 = 30; 30 is 20% of 150; 30 is 20% of 150

More examples and edge cases

  • 5% of 80 = 4
  • 150% of 40 = 60 — a percentage above 100 gives more than the original value
  • 45 is 75% of 60, and 60 is 133.333333% of 45 — the percentage depends on which number is the total
  • -10 is -20% of 50 — negative values give negative percentages
  • 12 is 8% of 150, and 12 is 150% of 8 — a percentage above 100 means the whole is smaller than the part
  • Dividing by zero has no answer: a number cannot be a percentage of 0, and no whole has 0% equal to a non-zero amount, so those cases show a message instead of a result
